what can you plug into the USB jack on an hoary version of the ps2? can i undamagingly hook up an mp3?, i would really like to know 4 sure

The little weird one on the front is not USB, it is an S400 port (aka i.400) and is a type of Firewire port.
Any hardware for the USB or Firewire ports requirement to have games near the necessary hardware drivers built into the team game, there are no USB or firewire drivers built into the PS2.
As far as I know the single things that will work in the USB slots are the grand piano, mouse, and eye toy produced by sony specifically for the PS2. I have never hear of anything that can be used in the Firewire port.
